I’ve always been an innovator in the use of technology to improve my business and personal life (as classified by the Diffusion of Innovation curve) but am keenly aware that I am NOT the market and have fallen into the “Chasm” a few times.
Over the course of my career I have seen many “new” terms and “novel” marketing and branding approaches that were mostly tweaks (or outright copies) of existing bodies of work … The originals are always better.
I don’t believe in the phrase that “those that can’t do … teach”. In fact, “those that can do … teach well”. I have done every marketing task myself in startups with sparse promotion funds, as well as, managed large marketing departments for multi-billion dollar international corporations with promotion budgets well over $20 million. I have been fortunate to have been able to travel widely in both Europe and Asia Pacific and have grown to enjoy their differences.
My experience includes over 20 years in marketing, primary research, communications and industry analysis at firms like Gartner Group, Regis McKenna, Mitsubishi Electronics and PageNet. Over the course of my career, I have worked as a senior executive in the Computer Security, Multimedia, Consumer Electronics, SATCOM, Wireless and Wired Networking and Communications, Personal Computing and Peripherals industries.
My Bachelor of Science degree is from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and my MBA is from The Leland Stanford Junior University Graduate School of Business … that is the official name for what most folks call Stanford University, but students often refer to it as “The Farm” since it was originally just that.
I’m an ex-musician (trumpet player) and in my spare time, I enjoy all forms of music (O.K. … Rap not that much at all), read widely and have found some good books on branding, marketing, positioning strategy, social media and leadership that have stood the test of time.
